TEXTURE

1. Actual Texture is one that may be experienced through the sense of touch. It may refer to the application of paint (impasto vs. glazes) as well as the surface or composition of a work of art (wood, steel, cement).
2. Simulated Texture is the artist's rendering or translation of an actual texture (i.e. faux painting, a painting of wood grain, etc.)
3. Symbolic Texture is an abstraction of actual textures usually in the form of mark-making consisting of hatches and stippling.
4. Invented Texture is a pattern of marks derived entirely from the artist's imagination.
